Beach plan has some holes to fill

Mario Messina, a geologist who lives on Casey Key, thinks that a system of structures called groynes extending into the Gulf of Mexico from Venice Beach might renourish it without the need to pump sand.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers replenished the beach by pumping sand from the Gulf floor about 10 years ago and 10 years before that, at a cost of millions of dollars each time.
