Watch your step at the beach — it’s beach bird hatching time

The Snowy Plover chick in this photo is the size of a human thumb. March through August is Beach Nesting Bird Season.

Newly hatched chicks run all over the beach looking for food. To help Beach Nesting Birds, Sarasota Audubon advises that beach goers keep a distance of 30-50 feet from buffered areas; let beach nesting birds and their young feed in peace. Watch your step as you walk and jog on the beaches of Southwest Florida.

It is nesting season at the beach — not sea turtles but shorebirds.

Sea turtles will begin nesting May 1, or possibly a week or two before that.
