At the end of South Casey Key Road, a dead armadillo’s stiffened legs pointed skyward, as if in supplication.

A bitter wind whisked cinders toward clouds that shawled the sunrise. Beside the water, a shadow building stood with shut and padlocked doors. The North Jetty Fish Camp had been temporarily closed since New Year’s Eve.
