Mayday call spurs Gulf search effort

The Coast Guard cutter Crocodile was one of several vessels dispatched in response to a mayday call Thursday evening reportedly from a boat 17 miles off the coast of Venice.

A mayday call from a man and a woman who said they were on a boat 17 miles west of Venice Beach had Coast Guard crews searching the Gulf of Mexico Thursday and Friday.

The brief VHF Marine radio call came in just after 8 p.m. Thursday. In it, a woman gives a coordinate of 17.3 degrees west off the coast and says their location is 17.2 miles out.
