John Mark Bishop, 93, born in Cheshire, Conn., Sept. 16, 1920, passed away in Venice, Fla., Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.
He was the son of the late Mark and Hazel Bishop. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.S. degree in 1941 and an M.S. degree from Cornell University in 1942.
In June of 1942, he was called to active duty overseas in the Philippines and Japan and served in the 11th Airborne Division. He was a paratrooper and instructor in Advanced Airborne Training and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain in the U.S. Army.
In 1947, he joined his father and uncle on a family-owned farm raising apples, peaches, plums and pears. A roadside store and cider mill were built and incorporated into the retail business.
John was elected First Selectman in the town of Cheshire, Conn., serving three two-year terms, and was instrumental in that town’s development. He later sold the farm in Cheshire, Conn., and bought a farm in Venice, Fla., where he spent many years raising flowers and vegetables and making honey.
He was predeceased by two sons, Robert Mark Bishop and John Gardner Bishop. He is survived by a daughter, Sheryl Bishop Wheale, of Naples, Fla.; four sons, Mark Edward Bishop and Michael Bishop, both of Cheshire, Conn., Jesse Bishop of Gainesville, Fla., and Jared Bishop of Guilford, Conn.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters Lynne Bishop Koths of Venice, Fla., and Sandi Bishop Howard of Gulf Stream, Fla.
Services: Services will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. Ewing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
