Helen L. Heffernan, 91, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2013. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Martin Beard; her second husband, James Heffernan; and her sister, Dorothy Huber.
Helen was a recent resident of Magnolia Glen in Raleigh, N.C., and moved in July with her daughter to Lynchburg, Va.
Helen made her career as a receptionist at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for 27 years in Maryland. She retired to Venice, Fla., with her second husband, where she became active in her community. Helen was a volunteer at Venice Hospital and with a local hospice organization. She and Jim were also members of the Venice Yacht Club.
Helen is survived by four daughters, Carol Brown of Frederick, Md., Suzanne Klein of Winston-Salem, N.C., Kathleen Larson of Sarasota, Fla., and Paula Gilman of Lynchburg, Va.; a stepson, Steve Heffernan, of San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred Levan; and Zuwena Mukandekezie, a caregiver who became part of the family.
