Frederick William Ruohonen, 86, of Venice, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his home.
Frederick William Ruohonen was born April 3, 1928. His parents emigrated from Sweden and Finland in their early teens and settled in the Detroit, Mich., area.
Fred attended Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Mich. He was in the U.S. Army and served two tours of duty in the Korean War. When he returned, he married, and was a branch manager for Lee & Cady Wholesale Grocers. Fred was also manager of novelty sales at the Fred Silber Company in Detroit, Mich.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Regina Mary (Jean) Ruohonen; his daughter, Karen (Richard Rieck); and his son, Guy Ruohonen. He has four grandchildren (Kelsey, David and Kevin Rieck and Bryce Ruohonen). He is also survived by his brother, Frank Ruohonen (Fay); nephew, Jon Ruohonen; and nieces, Kristin Hedges (Jim) and Nancy Feeney.
Fred was a life member of the VFW, DAV and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Redford, Mich., the DAV in Nokomis, Fla., and the Moose Lodge in Venice, Fla.
Fred was a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club. He was also past president of the Exchange Club of Redford, Mich.
Fred was an avid bowler in his early days and quite the card shark throughout his life. Fred was known for his giving ways, quick wit and dry humor. He was loved by everyone he met.
Services: Visitation will be held Sunday, May 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home. Burial will be later at Sarasota National Cemetery.
