William A. Murray

William Alfred Murray passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014.

He grew up in Glencoe, Ill., attended New Trier Township High School and graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He and his twin brother, George MacGregor, ran track at both New Trier and W&L.

A World War II veteran, he received his commission and served as a flight instructor at Enid, Okla., Army base. After the war, he had a long career in the food industry and became the president of H.W. Madison Co. in Medina, Ohio, and subsequently, a director of J.M. Smucker Co. in Orville, Ohio.

He loved golf and was a member of Westwood Country Club, Rocky River, Ohio, for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his beloved, Mary Barcus; daughters, Deborah Sloan (Hugh) of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Kathleen Edstrom (Paul) of Littleton, Colo., and Laurie Wade (Clifford) of Lexington, Va.; son, William M. Murray (Patty) of Lake Bluff, Ill; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 40 years, Bette Jane Murray, and his wife of 16 years, Donna S. Murray.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Services: A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 31, at 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 508 Riviera St, Venice, Fla., with further services and inurnment at 11 am Saturday, June 14, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 18001 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, Ohio.
