Jerry Vernon Jarrett passed from this life Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Venice Regional Bayfront Health after a brief illness. He was 82 years old.
Jerry was born Oct. 31, 1931, to Myrtle Allen Jarrett and Walter E. Jarrett in Abilene, Texas. While attending high school in Abilene, Jerry was a representative to Texas Boys State and attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.
Jerry graduated from Abilene High School in 1948, then served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Jerry graduated from Oklahoma University in 1956, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Jerry returned to Abilene to work for the Coca Cola Bottling Co. for five years. He then attended Harvard Business School. After graduating from Harvard in 1963, he served as an officer of Marine Midland Bank in New York City until 1973. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to become executive vice president of The Cleveland Trust Company. He later served as president and then CEO and chairman of The Cleveland Trust Company, which became AmeriTrust Company, until his retirement in 1990.
Jerry served many years on the boards of Baldwin Wallace College, Forest City Enterprises, The Centers for Families and Children, The Cleveland Orchestra, Karamu House, The United Way, The Cleveland Clinic, The Cleveland Foundation, The PKD Foundation, The Hillsdale College Parents’ Board, The Holden Arboretum, Up with People and the Cleveland Salvation Army, as well as the International Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.
He was the chairman of the 1986 Cleveland United Way Campaign that raised more than $47 million. Jerry received the Israel Peace Medal in 1985 and an honorary doctor of law degree from Baldwin Wallace in 1991.
Jerry was involved in research funding for polycystic kidney disease. He also served as a member of the administrative board of The Church of The Saviour, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and as an elder at Venice Presbyterian Church, Venice, Fla.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Martha McCabe Jarrett, in 2012, and his brother, Walter A. Jarrett, in 2008.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Hall (Jerry Hall), of Silverton, Ore.; and his four children, Cynthia Jarrett Carlson (Christopher Carlson), Chuck Jarrett (Stephanie Baker Jarrett), Christopher Jarrett (Jennifer Bradshaw Jarrett) and John Jarrett; his seven grandchildren, Nancy Carlson, Cathleen Carlson Pavelka (Ryan Pavelka), Melissa Carlson Collins (Joshua Collins), Megan McCabe Jarrett, Katie Jarrett, Beau Jarrett and Danae Jarrett; and two great-grandchildren, Jake Pavelka and Claire Pavelka.
Services: A Memorial Service will be held at Venice Presbyterian Church Wednesday, June 4, at 4 p.m. Interment will be in the Venice Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.
