George W. (Bill) Griswold, 92, of Anderson, Ind., and Venice, Fla., passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Community Hospital Anderson.

He was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Champaign, Ill., and was a member of the Christian Church in Ludlow, Ill.

George attended Gallagher School in rural Ludlow, Ill., and graduated from Paxton High School, Paxton, Ill., in 1939. He joined the Army Feb. 11, 1941, serving his country during World War II in France, Italy, Africa, Germany and Austria.

Before marriage to Beverly, he completed HVAC training in Chicago, Ill. Following his marriage, he bought the former Gallagher School, converting it to a home where he and his family resided for 20 years.

While there, he was a plumber, sold home insurance and farmed with his father. In 1970, he moved to Anderson, Ind., where he purchased the McDonald’s restaurant in downtown Anderson, Ind. Following retirement in 1987, he owned and operated Griswold Travel.

He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion. He was also a member of 40/8; the Elks in Venice, Fla., and Paxton, Ill; the Masonic Lodge, Murat Temple, of Indianapolis, Ind.; International Shrine Club of Indianapolis, Ind.; Madison County Shrine Club of Anderson, Ind.; and the Madison County Legion of Honor. He was a former participant in the Madison County Desert Patrol and a proud member of the Society of the 3rd Infantry.

He enjoyed traveling in the continental United States, Europe, Central and South America, Hawaii, New Zealand, Alaska, the Greek Islands, Egypt and Israel. He also enjoyed dancing and playing cards. He spent four years building his 1929 Mercedes and enjoyed parading in it.

George is survived by his loving spouse, Beverly (Brison) Griswold, whom he married Dec. 19, 1948; children David W. Griswold (companion Barbara Demlow) of Anderson, Ind., Kristin L. (James) Stanley of Anderson, Ind., Sherrilyn L. West of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and James W. Griswold of Anderson, Ind.; grandchildren Julie Kowalke, Joe Griswold, Scott and Brian Martinez, Amber, Ashley, Dustin (wife Bailey), Andrea and Sydney Griswold; step-grandchildren James K. Stanley (Carol) and Mike K. Stanley (Janet), and Barbara’s children, Elizabeth, Crystal, Bobbey and Katheryne; great-grandchildren Jessika, Saylor, Caleb, Dylan, Jared, Chandler, Owen and Serenity; and nieces and nephews Andrea Forney, Stacy Poncelow, Diane Griswold, and Ralph and Bryce Bankert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Anna B.(Watson) Griswold; granddaughter Michele Giddings; and siblings, Helen Kennedy Price, Alice Bartell Williamson and Richard Griswold.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gallanosa, his staff and the staff of Community Hospital for their loving care and kindness.

Services: Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 12:45 p.m. at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, Ind. Services will be Tuesday, July 8, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Donna Goings officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Ludlow Cemetery, in Ludlow, Ill.

Contributions: Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent’s Anderson Regional Hospital or Community Hospital Anderson.
