Venice High assistant coach Mike Lay was recognized for 50 years of coaching prior to last week’s freshman football game. Lay began his coaching career at Baldwin County High in Milledgeville, Ga., in 1963. After leading Charlotte to an undefeated season as head coach in 1971, he served as VHS defensive coordinator from 1974-1991 and returned to Venice after spending 19 years (1991-2010) at Riverview.
