On a night that looked like it was going to be a story of redemption for a Venice softball player, the Sarasota Lady Sailors spoiled the party after capitalizing on a couple of late key hits in a 2-1 victory over the Lady Indians Thursday night in Sarasota.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between Venice’s Nikkie Kovalsky and Sarasota’s Clarissa Lynch, who were both getting strong play from their defenses. Venice had a chance to go up in the top of the first inning after loading up the bases after back-to-back singles by Taylor Baker and Carley Rosa and a walk by Kovalsky, but Lynch countered by striking out Mackenna Lloyd and forcing Elsie Rivera into a groundout at short to end the threat.
