Two big plays, one giant win

Venice shortstop Dalton Guthrie takes a perfect throw from catcher Mike Rivera and tags out Naples' Rico Soto for the second out of a double play Thursday night. The play prevented a run from scoring in what would be a 1-0 win for Venice over the Golden Eagles.

Despite managing only one hit and scoring their only run when the bases were loaded after three hit batsmen, Venice High School is advancing in the Region 6A-3 tournament after a 1-0 win over Naples on Thursday night.

“These games are tough and you have to get the run across when it counts,” Venice head coach Craig Faulkner said. “It doesn’t matter how you do it.”
