The Montgomery family of Venice poses with the flag that hangs in the Venice High School gym in honor of Martell Montgomery. The family donated Martell's original flag, which hung in the old VHS gym for nearly 30 years. Pictured, from left to right, are Vern Montgomery, Mike Montgomery, Missy Montgomery, Mark Montgomery and Beverly Montgomery.

The "new" flag in the VHS gym features a plaque that honors Martell Montgomery for his service in World War II. Two generations of the Montgomery family have played basketball under the flag, which Vern Montgomery donated to be hung in the old gym in 1984. The family donated a new flag when the new "TeePee" opened last year.

For nearly 30 years an American flag hung in the old Venice High School gym, but no one outside of a Venice family knew where it came from.

That changed when the new gym opened at Venice High School last year. When the flag was placed on the northeast corner of the gym, VHS officials made sure that those who saw the flag new it was there to honor Martell Montgomery, a World War II veteran who passed away in 1972. Martell’s family has been in the Venice area for 30 years.
