I happened to catch a few minutes of a local news broadcast the other night. From what the talking heads were saying, it was clear Southwest Florida’s water is on the highway to hell and the pedal is to the metal. There’s red tide killing fish and making people sick all along our beaches. Billions of gallons of toxic water are being dumped from Lake Okeechobee, creating an environmental nightmare from which we might never recover. Woe and agony! We’re all DOOMED!! PANIC NOW!!

OK, slow down there, Sparky. Yes, it’s true that Charlotte Harbor’s water is lot darker than you might expect for this time of year. And yes, patches of red tide are lurking off our coast and have killed some fish. More of them might die. But this is not the end. The sky is not falling, no matter what Chicken Little tells you.
