One of my absolute favorite lures is the DOA C.A.L. shad (what most people call a paddletail). I love this bait’s simplicity, versatility, many color options, and general fish-catching ability all year long.
Most saltwater anglers who use these baits and other soft plastics put them on a jighead. Nothing wrong with that — I frequently fish it this way. But there are a lot of other techniques for rigging soft plastic lures that are better for some circumstances. We could learn a lot from freshwater bass fishermen, who have developed a number of methods that work very well in the salt, if we’d just give them a shot.
