Do you know the difference between flotsam and jetsam? We’ll find out in a moment. Over the years, I’ve come across quite a few interesting floating items. Some of them were things of value that were lost accidentally and which their previous owners would certainly regret losing.

I’ve found dozens of floating bait buckets, including more than a few which came complete with live bait. The feeling you get when you pull in a wayward bait bucket and look inside to discover that it contains several dozen live shrimp is akin to winning the bait bucket lottery. Sadly, in recent years the number of wayward bait buckets has decreased, since more and more boats (even small ones) are now equipped with built-in livewells. This may be difficult for today’s crop of anglers to believe, but there was a time when the majority of Charlotte Harbor’s live bait anglers hung bait buckets overboard when they stopped to fish.
