Birding Lee County

It was just another beautiful sunny day with a light breeze in Southwest Florida. The Venice Area Birding Association had planned our yearly trek to Randall Research Center on Pine Island. This trip included 11 people and a convoy of three vans. Naturally, birders have their eye out for anything with feathers along the way. We sighted an American kestrel, several sandhill cranes and hundreds of cattle egrets in the fields along the way.

The Randall Research Center is a fascinating site packed with history. We have visited this site annually for quite a few years and have mingled with the spirit of what used to be the most powerful people in Florida … the Calusa Indians. We were hiking the Calusa Heritage Trail, which is an internationally famous site. Even though we are all birders and nature-oriented, we were listening just in case we could hear the distant drums of history along the trail.
