The other day I was sitting outdoors at a restaurant, watching the wildlife in the bay. As I was getting ready to head out, I just happened to see a group of paddlers come up to the docks. The group had various kayaks and SUPs. And what I took notice of was that the kayakers all had their personal flotation devices (some wearing them, others using them as cushions or backrests), but not one of the paddleboarders had a PFD. They were all attached to the SUPs by ankle leashes, though.
I thought about this for a moment, and I knew what their answer was going to be before I asked the ever-popular question to these paddleboarders: “Where are your life vests?” One answered, and I quote “ Oh, I read somewhere that if you were attached to the SUP by the ankle leash, then that acts as a life vest.”
