The birds of Kiwanis Park

The weather was overcast and it was sprinkling on the windshield. Gray clouds hovered over as we drove to meet the Venice Area Birding Association group at Kiwanis Park in Port Charlotte. We pulled into the parking lot and everyone had their binoculars focused on the treetops. I jumped out and ran over to see what everyone was focused on.

A family of barred owls was sitting out on the limbs of the old oak trees. They appeared rather nonplussed regarding this group of a dozen people peering up at them. I thought this was a great way to start a birding trip. After the usual greetings to our VABA friends we had not seen for a while, trip leader Robert Kraft herded the group down the trail.
