February has typically been a banner month for sheepshead at the Venice jetties in the past, but this season — and several others in recent years — the bite just hasn’t seemed to ignite.
It’s not like there are no fish; the sheepshead are there and anglers are catching them. But the numbers and the quality fish of 16-plus inches are not up to snuff with what’s become expected of one of Southwest Florida’s premier shore-bound sheepshead destinations. The days of fish after fish being hauled up on the rocks are becoming elusive.
