Spanish mackerel seem to get a bad rap as table fare, but do they deserve it? I don’t think I’m alone in saying, no, they don’t.
Mackerel might not rank up there with sheepshead, snook, pompano or cobia, but don’t let that turn you off to them. They’re easy and fun to catch, the minimum length is only 12 inches and you can keep 15 per day; although I’m not sure why anyone would do that unless they were planning a fish fry. Or maybe if your family is the size of a small army. The bottom line is that if you handle them and prepare them properly, mackerel are a good-eating fish.
