Springtime and Spanish mackerel go hand-in-hand, and while there are many ways to target them, one particular favorite comes to mind. Using a popping cork or float in combination with live shrimp can provide hours of fun and effective fishing.
A guy approached me on the Placida pier recently on a day when many anglers were successfully targeting Spanish using floats and live shrimp. He asked me why no one seemed to be casting at the mackerel, going after them with artificial lures. It was a great question, and gave me slight pause before I answered him.
