I had a very unusual adventure this week. I didn’t have to climb a tree to recover an osprey that was stuck in a branch by his toe. I didn’t have to claw through mud to open the drainage system so three flightless eagles wouldn’t drown. No one dropped anything on my head — including those helpful birds that are always so generous with the hair “products”. What strange and wonderful quest did I participate in this week? It was quaint little tradition called a “spa day”.

First some background information. One of Peace River Wildlife Center’s generous donors and local philanthropist, David Moe, decided last year that for his wife’s birthday he would pay for her and three of her friends to go to an evening of martini tasting and manicures. I got a call out of the blue that I am supposed to meet these ladies there because her husband also wanted some deserving local nonprofit volunteer to participate in her special day. I was, of course, immediately suspicious. (See any previous article.) My directions were to meet them at a specific address, go upstairs (even though it might look like it was closed), after dark…the whole thing sounded like a low-budget horror movie with a trite script. I’ll spare you the gory details, but I had a Key Lime Martini and my fingernails were painted a lovely shade of mauve. Turns out I should be a little more trusting. Hey, I went, didn’t I?
