Mike's wife Stacy with a snook she caught on a bar inside Turtle Bay. Her bait of choice for this 32.5-inch fatty was a 13-inch sugar trout. As she always says, “Go big or go home.”

OK, I’m going to let you guys in on a little secret: I have a bad habit. This habit, for the most part, is one that I’ve really tried to keep hidden from people. Now, it’s not that I’m embarrassed by it, because I’m not. It’s actually a very common practice that’s shared by many, many people throughout our great state, and especially here in Southwest Florida. I just don’t like too many people knowing that I hang around in such murky places. You know how people are — they like to talk, and before you know it, everybody knows where you hang out.

Well, before someone else has the chance to tell you, I would like to confess to one of my favorite addictions. So here goes: Hi. I’m Capt. Mike, and I like to hang out at bars. That’s right — just about every day of the year, you can find me on a bar. My favorite bar right now is the Turtle Bay bar, but I also frequent Long Bar, the East Wall and West Wall bars, and just about every other sand and oyster bar that Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties have to offer. Bars are great places to hang out. I even met my wife at a bar. Actually, that’s not true (we met on the Manatee County Blood Mobile) but I thought saying it would spice up this column some. But to be truthful, she likes to hang out on bars as much as I do — and I have photos to prove it.
