I had a run-in with an ancient warrior last Saturday. No, not Rocky Balboa. I’m talking about those regular stars of Discovery Channel specials: A shark. Sharks have been around for millions of years. Unfortunately, they never developed good preventative dental care. That’s why beachcombers collect their fossilized teeth from many Gulf shorelines, including Manasota Key, where I happened to be patiently dangling a fishing line.
Understand that weekend surf fishing during peak tourist season is not common behavior for me. It’s not that I am not an introvert. I just worry about hooking somebody’s hairpiece during a backcast. But my wife wanted some wave-watching beach time to meditate about the men she could have married, so I brought a light rod, a dozen tiny shrimp and some very low expectations.
