The Hibiscus Cup sprouted its roots in 2006 by local Dennis Peck. As a companion to the Hibiscus Festival, it was intended to show that Punta Gorda was open for business after Hurricane Charley. The Cup is for small sailboats only — so that the races can be held very close to the shore of the festival site.
The seventh running of the race was held last weekend, and was supported by the three area youth sailing organizations: The Sailing Center, Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the YMCA. The day was windy, which kept many small boats away. There were five 2.4 Meter boats; three from the Sailing Center and two provided by Fort Myers builder Tony Pochlington. One Sunfish was provided by the YMCA. Participants Logan Boucher and Cooper Whitten (Sunfish) are graduates of Sailing Center programs and Cooper has assisted the YMCA in training programs. All participants had good, wet fun. Perhaps the most fun was the close racing between Peck and Pochlington in the 2.4 Meters. Their scores were tied after five races, with Peck getting first place via most first-place finishes.
