The old Boca Grande Pass jig may be dead, but new rigs are being created from the same parts and pieces. This has made some people very unhappy. As I see it, there’s no problem — unless the folks developing these rigs are trying to skirt the law.
Let me say this first: Anyone making and using “cheater” rigs deserves to get busted, and if it were up to me, the fines would be a lot more significant than they are. I’ve seen photos of fishermen in Boca Grande Pass using illegal jigs this year (specifically, rig #2 from the photo at right), and what they’re doing is despicable. But there are legitimate reasons for trying to devise a legal way of fishing with the jig.
