Now that you’ve had time to recover from the manic nine-day red snapper season, it’s time to start thinking about going offshore again. Gag grouper season opens July 1, and although you have a lot more than nine days to bring a couple home (actually, you have until December 3 at least in state waters), there’s just something about opening day.
Gags are great fighters, and they’re pretty good eating as well, although I like snapper and amberjack better. They’re a fantastic fish, and one of the few that can be caught both inshore and offshore in good numbers. They’re also very different from some of our other grouper species in that they are dedicated predators, which means you can use artificial lures to much better effect.
